Salyersville’s Role as a Regional Player

The re-construction of the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway into a modern four-lane highway greatly improves accessibility into the heart of central Appalachia. Salyersville is the first city the new modern highway travels through. Our geographic location and accessibility provide Salyersville an opportunity to become a regional player in Appalachia’s economic development.

Magoffin County was designated as a work-ready community “in-progress” in 2017 by the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development. The new Magoffin County Industrial Park, five miles west of Salyersville, is approximately 90 miles east of Lexington. This site has enormous potential because of its proximity to the interstate, central Kentucky, and other manufacturing facilities in the heart of Kentucky.

The Magoffin County Industrial Park’s location is ideal. A talented and ambitious workforce resides in Magoffin and the adjoining counties of Wolf, Morgan, Breathitt, and the surrounding area. There is a talented workforce pool in place that companies need. Many potential employees were formerly employed in the mining industry and have the skillset necessary for manufacturing. A shining example of what is possible is Logan Corporation.

They made the decision to re-locate their manufacturing facility in Salyersville in 2016. They have seen tremendous growth and are a regional success story. Logan Corporation manufactures and installs custom dump bodies on truck cabs and chassis. They also do almost any type of metal fabrication imaginable. They have grown by leaps and bounds and have added greatly to the economic vitality of Salyersville and Magoffin County.

Great things are possible in Appalachia. The City of Salyersville realizes our region’s potential and wants to do its part to ensure a successful future for our area. The future looks bright if we pull together, look beyond county lines and geographic boundaries, and commit ourselves to be the best we can be. There is no place for nay-sayers. We are willing to embrace the future and the opportunities we have been afforded.

Entrepreneurism, creativity, ingenuity, innovation, and steadfast determination all have a place in our overall economic outlook.
